40 Years of Innovation

For forty years, SAIC has solved our customers’ mission-critical problems with innovative applications of technology and expertise. We do this with the constant and deliberate commitment to ethical performance and integrity that has marked SAIC since its founding.

A Letter from Ken Dahlberg, Chairman of the Board

Science Applications International Corporation marked its 40th anniversary on February 3, 2009. Dr. J. Robert Beyster started the company from scratch with three employees in a small office in La Jolla, California. He said then he would build the company by recruiting smart, inventive people to work on technical problems important to the nation. Dr. Beyster offered talented people the challenges they wanted, the colleagues they needed and the ability to build a business. The formula worked, slowly at first, then with accelerating speed.

However, even these elements were not enough to attract the people and build the company he wanted. As he would later say in his book, people came “because they would be able to work for an organization that put ethical behavior at the top of the list.”1

From that small beginning, a multi-billion dollar business was built. It is one of the great American success stories. Today, at 45,000 strong, we remain a company of smart people now solving hard problems around the world. And we remain a company that puts ethical behavior at the top of the list.
