Environmental Stewardship

SAIC's commitment to improving our environmental footprint through careful stewardship of energy and water resources while managing and minimizing our waste and greenhouse gas emissions is an essential part of our overall approach to sustainability. Continuous, methodical and measurable improvements to environmental performance are the key to achieving changes necessary to help address this global challenge. On Oct. 11, 2011, our CEO issued a formal statement that outlines specific goals and actions that will track our progress in meeting this challenge.

The practical and innovative steps we take to minimize the environmental impact of our facilities are but one part of our overall effort. We encourage our 40,000 employees to take a proactive role in the office, at home and in their communities. We bring our clients a wealth of technical expertise backed with solid business experience through our growing engineering services. SAIC was recently recognized as one of the six top leaders in sustainable engineering by the independent analyst firm Verdantix.

Learn more about our sustainable business practices below:

  • Greenhouse Gas Emissions: In June 2010, SAIC earned Climate Registered™ status by successfully registering its comprehensive greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory for SAIC-owned facilities and vehicles according to the rigorous standards of The Climate Registry. SAIC is also a founding member of The Climate Registry, a non-profit organization established in 2007 to calculate and publicly report on six greenhouse gas emissions internationally recognized by the Kyoto Protocol in a common, accurate and transparent manner consistent across industry sectors and borders. We are currently expanding the scope of our GHG emissions inventory to include leased facilities, business travel, employee commuting and other indirect emissions.
  • Energy: In a continuous effort to improve energy efficiency, SAIC has conducted, and in some cases completed, several complex and important energy reduction initiatives and assessments in recent years. For example, in 2011 we installed an energy management dashboard at our headquarters facility in McLean, Va., to help facility mangers identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency through access to real-time energy data. Optimizing comprehensive energy efficiency companywide is an ongoing activity.
  • Waste: SAIC has actively promoted various recycling programs for well over a decade and is expanding existing recycling programs in facilities we own. We have won multiple business recycling awards from Fairfax County, Va., and the city of San Diego, Calif. Our corporate headquarters campus in McLean, Va., is "landfill-free" as a result of comprehensive composting, recycling and redirection of remaining waste to a local Energy-from-Waste (EfW) plant that creates clean power and a sound alternative to landfill dumping.
  • Water: SAIC monitors its water use and is working to further minimize this use through water efficient technologies and conservation. In compliance with California regulations, SAIC has installed wastewater collection and distribution systems at its San Diego location, a facility that has been using reclaimed water for landscape irrigation since 1998.
