The company's environmental, health and safety (EH&S) program (which is further delineated in the "SAIC EH&S Program Manual") underscores our commitment to quality work and customer satisfaction, insistence on the highest standards of ethical behavior and professional integrity, and adherence to both the letter and spirit of the law and business procedures designed to enhance and preserve the reputation of the company.
SAIC is committed to providing a safe and healthful workplace for its employees. Preventing work-related injuries and illnesses is a key part of this commitment. Over the past five years, SAIC's total excluding subsidiaries recordable injury and illness case rate (based on results provided to the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, a commonly used industry standard measure of safety performance) was at least 40 percent below the industry average.
* The SAIC injury and illness rate performance in 2010 was negatively affected by loss experience associated with a particular contract involving unique exposures. More aggressive management of the health and safety aspects associated with those contract exposures, which continued into 2011, resulted in significant performance improvements as reflected in the 2011 injury and illness rate performance.
SAIC's injury and illness performance has received numerous accolades and awards from a variety of organizations and customers, including the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Department of Energy (DOE), and the National Safety Council. Our contract activity at the NASA Johnson Space Center has also been recognized by OSHA as a Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star site.
As part of its commitment to ethics and integrity, SAIC promotes environmental sustainability in its business as a key element of corporate responsibility, contributing to the environmental, social and financial well-being of the communities in which it serves and operates. This includes taking practical steps to reduce any negative environmental impacts of our work and being committed to addressing issues of corporate environmental responsibility in SAIC's strategic business planning efforts.

Notable activities in this area include SAIC's early participation in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's voluntary Green Lights program through installation of energy-efficient lighting. SAIC also maintains a variety of other active environmental sustainability programs, including the use of reclaimed water for all landscape irrigation on our San Diego campus and landfill free operations at our headquarters in McLean, Va. SAIC continues initiatives to improve energy efficiency across our operations to help meet a corporate target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent by 2020 from 2010 levels. In our facility design and construction processes, we look to incorporate leading-edge energy management systems and building material selections in order to reduce the environmental impacts of those projects. SAIC's Sustainability Working Group, made up of senior managers from various corporate and line functions, has created an enterprise sustainability program that takes advantage of our energy and environmental expertise and positions the company to see a positive return on investments, better alignment with key stakeholders and meets customer requests for disclosure.
The SAIC Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) management system is designed to ensure that our operations are conducted and our product and service offerings are provided in a manner that protects the well-being of our employees, customers, the general public, and the environment. For successful performance, numerous tools have been developed to help ensure EH&S-related hazards, environmental impacts, and regulatory requirements are anticipated and required controls are formally identified, communicated, and implemented throughout the business life cycle.
