Growth of the Company: FY 1970

Survival was the main concern of SAI during its first year. The company's first solid business base was established with the Defense Nuclear Agency (DNA), performing sophisticated nuclear weapons effects calculations.

Fiscal Year 1970

This initial work grew to include other areas of weapons effects such as nuclear blast, simulation, and underground test instrumentation and measurements. Eventually, these elements were integrated to encompass broader systems and policy studies. In Fiscal Year 1970, a single office in La Jolla, California, housed 20 staff members to perform both Department of Defense (DoD) and non-DoD work.

  • The early use of computers at SAI to perform technical analyses provided the basis for two separate branches of computer-related growth:
    1. large-scale systems analysis and modeling; and
    2. development of integrated software, including the provision of data-processing services and training based on the latest in computer technology
  • SAI had expertise in both radiation effects and in radiation treatment — when these two activities were merged, SAI’s health business was established
