Growth of the Company: FY 1980

Science Applications Incorporated entered a new decade with the same rapid growth in revenues, profits and technical staff with which it entered its first decade. The cost of borrowing was at an all-time high and it became extremely important that SAI generate much of its own working capital through retained earnings.


Fiscal Year 1980

SAI’s size and capabilities, particularly its distinguished professional staff of experienced scientists, engineers and managers, placed the company in a position to influence many of the events which would shape the future.

Growth had become almost a natural process at SAI as a result of both the innovative, dynamic people who were attracted to the organization, and the freedom they had to pursue their entrepreneurial interests.

  • SAI provided technical support to foreign military forces under the sponsorship of the U.S. Government

  • Energy business contributed a large segment of annual revenues, focusing on new sources and forms of energy such as oil shale, coal conversion, safer uses of nuclear energy, solar energy and energy conservation

  • Through its nuclear safety business, SAI played a key role in responding to the Three Mile Island nuclear accident in a timely manner

  • Major technical support was provided to the EPA and other government agencies

  • SAI also provided information services to government health care services
