In Fiscal Year 1997, as never before, SAIC applied its capabilities and experience in advanced technology to serve its customers’ needs. Exhibiting both breadth and depth in its core technical competencies, SAIC became one of the world’s top systems integrators and one of the leading research and development firms in the U.S.

SAIC also was one of the largest providers of solutions in information technology, data security, electronic commerce, Internet and Intranet services, a major builder of the country’s defense information infrastructure, and one of the largest and most successful government contractors.

One of the company’s major strategic goals was to increase its commercial and international business. In Fiscal Year 1997, non-U.S. government contract revenues were the fastest-growing business, with an increase of 40% to $509 million, or 27%, of total revenues.

  • SAIC was ranked #3 among the top 200 federal contractors by Government Executive Magazine and #3 among the top 25 Prime Contractors by Federal Computer Week

  • National security services remained SAIC’s largest business area, accounting for $1.05 billion, or 44%, of total revenues

  • In Fiscal Year 1997, SAIC’s customers awarded the company $4.8 billion in new business; the company won an enviable 47% of the dollar value of contracts upon which it bid

  • The accomplishments for the year were reflected in the stock price, which reached $25.69 by year’s end, an impressive 34% gain during the year

  • In November of Fiscal Year 1996, the company announced an agreement to acquire Bellcore, now known as Telcordia Technologies, one of the world’s largest providers of telecommunications services; the transaction brought SAIC’s sales to an estimated $4 billion, with more than 30,000 science, engineering, software and administrative professionals
