(McLEAN, Va.) Dec. 5, 2012 – In the face of recurring protests and thoroughfare obstructions, Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) [NYSE: SAI] was retained by a major oil and gas company to develop a long-term security program to prevent possible disruptions to the drilling program. The exploration company is not named for security purposes. As a result of SAIC’s work, $20 million in assets were protected and the company was able to conduct operations in a hostile environment without incident.
Hostility toward shale gas exploration in the region had escalated, and threats of violence, protests, thoroughfare obstructions, equipment damage, and vandalism disrupted shale gas exploration activities. After conducting a threat, risk, and vulnerability assessment of the company’s drilling sites and operation, SAIC developed mitigating measures and a security plan, including the addition of backup power and repositioning of security cameras for reliable, full-area coverage. Then, to circumvent delivery roadblocks and avoid material shortages, SAIC identified essential supplies, secured spare supplies on-site, and established alternate delivery methods for other materials.
Additionally, SAIC trained the company’s guard force to monitor the area, conduct daily threat assessments, and respond appropriately to events. Throughout the drilling season, SAIC exchanged intelligence with local law enforcement to proactively manage the demonstrations and protect the company’s assets. Because zero days were lost due to security incidents, drilling schedules were able to be met.
