SAIC’s Emergency Response Program Continues to Support Hurricane Sandy Recovery, Power Restoration

(McLEAN, Va.) November 19, 2012 – Science Applications International Corporation’s (SAIC) emergency management, disaster recovery, and power delivery teams continue to support utility, government, and private and non-profit clients impacted by Hurricane Sandy to provide disaster mitigation, response, recovery, and power restoration. SAIC has helped U.S. clients recover from almost every hurricane since 2004, as well as tornadoes, floods, snow and ice storms, and other man-made disasters by rebuilding and repairing damaged infrastructure.

Prior to Hurricane Sandy making landfall in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, SAIC prepared to support existing clients in communities along the Eastern Seaboard. In the wake of the storm, SAIC disaster recovery teams were on the ground helping public organizations conduct post-event operations and expedite recovery. SAIC deployed more than 50 staff and debris field monitors to support emergency cleanup efforts in Connecticut and other communities.

“Our number one concern is assisting local governments get back on their feet quickly," said Jonathan Burgiel, vice president and operations manager for SAIC's disaster recovery division. “Having served more than 220 state and local government customers, and more than 30 million people nationally, we have the expertise and experience to help our customers recover quickly. Moreover, once the clean-up work is complete, we help our clients obtain reimbursement from Federal Emergency Management Agency for their disaster-related expenses in a timely fashion.”

To support cross utility and power restoration efforts in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, SAIC also lent its utility experts to many of its Eastern Seaboard utility clients for on-the-ground support. SAIC worked alongside line crews and engineers from across the utility industry that came to the region to support outage and crew management activities.

“We applied our expertise and resources to provide clients with much-needed services in response to this devastating natural disaster," said Jim Baxter, vice president and operations manager for SAIC’s energy consulting and engineering business. “I am proud that our staff was willing to immediately deploy to an area of great need as a natural extension of our engineering solutions. This level of assistance shows that SAIC is committed to our clients’ needs in the best and worst of times.”
