SAIC Design Team Awarded Oklahoma’s Best Engineering Project in 2012
(McLEAN, Va.) February 20, 2013 – The design team of Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) was honored with the Grand Conceptor Award at the January American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Oklahoma Engineering Excellence Awards presentation as Oklahoma's best engineering project in 2012. The Interstate-40 (I-40) Crosstown Expressway Relocation Project unknowingly spurred the renaissance of Oklahoma City and positively impacted state economy.
The I-40 section from the I-235/I-35 interchange west approximately four miles to May Avenue, known locally as the “Crosstown Expressway,” was originally constructed in 1965. Discussions first started about 20 years ago to relocate the I-40 Crosstown approximately five blocks from the existing location. This project began a monumental movement to turn the abandoned downtown back into a thriving city center with new business and nightlife. The project coincided with the City of Oklahoma City’s Core to Shore urban redevelopment plan including a Central Park, MAPS 3, the development of the Boathouse District along the Oklahoma River, Devon Tower, Project 180 and an NBA basketball team – the Oklahoma City Thunder.
SAIC collaborated with MacArthur Associated Consultants, Cobb Engineering Company, and Poe & Associates on the design and construction for the I-40 Crosstown Expressway. Each teaming member portrayed flexibility, complex design knowledge, and collaboration in order for innovation and sustainable design practices to come to life in this extensive project.
