SAIC Provides Smart Grid as a Service Offering to United Power

(McLEAN, Va.) October 11, 2012 – Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) [NYSE: SAI] was awarded a 10 year contract by United Power for a 10,000 meter pilot project of advanced metering infrastructure solutions and implementation of SAIC’s Smart Grid as a Service (SGS) offering. Services began in July to build out the infrastructure and once in operation, will deliver immediate improved efficiency and enhanced customer service for United Power. United Power is a rural electric cooperative providing electric service to nearly 70,000 homes and businesses throughout Colorado's northern Front Range.

“SAIC’s SGS provides a comprehensive, affordable, and integrated one-stop resource for United Power, and enables our organization to better manage the risks associated with implementation of this advanced technology,” said United Power CEO, Ron Asche. SGS’s integrated hardware and software solution provides advanced metering infrastructure, outage alerts, remote connection capabilities, as well as the capability for enhanced integration of alternative energy metering such as time of use and net metering. As part of the SGS project, SAIC is assisting United Power with refining their business processes and driving the culture change necessary to fully derive the benefits of SGS.

“SGS will provide the direct advantage of on-demand meter reads, as well as improved billing accuracy and more detailed outage information, and the capability for United Power to offer customers a web portal to view and manage energy consumption,” said SAIC Senior Vice President of Smart Grid, Kenneth Stewart. “We are excited for the opportunity to work with United Power to enhance and modernize its service capabilities through the SGS model.”

“At United Power, we take pride in using innovative technologies that improve efficiency and our ability to provide economical and reliable power to our customers. SAIC’s SGS offering enables our organization to operate more efficiently, improve system reliability , analyze more timely information for making business decisions, and enhance our customer service,” said Mitzi Rea, manager of information services at United Power. “With SGS, we will be able to modernize our infrastructure and replace obsolete equipment while working with SAIC’s experts for implementation and support. This will be a winning combination for United Power customers.”

“We are pleased to offer United Power and other utilities a more economical way to navigate the growing menu of advanced metering options,” said Mark Fronmuller, vice president for SAIC. “SGS allows United Power to avoid large up-front investments, and to gradually upgrade their system on their desired schedule. It is important to SAIC that we offer a solution that doesn’t require raising customer rates to pay for the latest technology.”
