Alloptic IT Passive Optical Network (PON) Infrastructure

Introduction

Reduce IT Costs. Improve Performance. Increase Reliability. Enhance Security. Conserve Natural Resources.

Alloptic, long time OEM providing equipment to the cable TV industry, is now helping to revolutionize Information Technology Infrastructure (ITI) with the introduction of its PON product solutions. The Alloptic equipment provides a fiber optic solution built around proven standardized PON technology that converges voice, video (RF or IP), data, security cameras, wireless antennas and building management sensors over the same single-mode fiber. Additionally, Alloptic's diverse PON product line allows for easy scalability, supporting anywhere from 50 to 50,000 or more end-point devices very cost effectively. By using Alloptic PON equipment on new construction or renovation projects, organizations can take a powerful leap forward in alleviating the power, space, cooling, and bandwidth limitation issues that have been a burden to the IT market space for years.

Quantifiable and Compelling Benefits

Alloptic's PON equipment is capable of transmitting very high data rates from 40 feet to 40 miles with absolutely no active electronics in between the data center and desktop or end-point device. The centralization of high-value IT equipment in a single location eliminates the need for the traditional work group switches in riser closets, greatly reducing the electronic components comprising the network. Fewer electronics translate into fewer failure points in the Alloptic PON network and a more reliable ITI with virtually unlimited bandwidth potential. This simplified architecture combined with competitive Alloptic pricing means savings of up to 40 percent on ITI installation costs and 80 percent savings on IT-related power, space, and cooling requirements. Implementing an Alloptic PON also means that fewer trained IT professionals are required to maintain the network, reducing IT operations and maintenance costs by up to 80 percent. Together, these savings truly earn Alloptic PON the label of Green IT.

Bridging the Past to the Future

Designed around the many features and benefits of single-mode fiber, Alloptic's PON is comprised of three main components; the Optical Network Terminal (ONT), passive optical splitters, and Optical Line Terminal (OLT). As a pure Layer-2 transport IT Infrastructure solution, Alloptic equipment interoperates seamlessly with current IP networks, building a bridge from the past to the future so that organizations can get full life-cycle use out of their present data center equipment while covering themselves against the unforeseen IT requirements of the future. The OLT is the heart of the Alloptic PON, performing traditional Layer-2 addressing and prioritization functions. The ONT sits near the end-point device and serves as a media converter and network security gateway. In between the OLT and ONT are strategically placed PON splitters engineered to maximize the scalability of the ITI.

The SAIC Advantage

As the exclusive Alloptic distributor to the government, SAIC has incorporated Alloptic equipment into a system we call Secure Converged Solution or SCS. Working tirelessly with Alloptic developers, SAIC personnel have been able to engineer out unwanted costs and features of the Alloptic equipment that is required in the cable TV markets while perfecting a methodology for providing our customers with a lower-cost, highly reliable, better performing, and more future-proof IT Infrastructure solution to stretch their valuable IT investment dollars.
