SSan Diego Cyber Defense Challenge: The Mayor's Cup: One hundred and forty high schools. Eight finalists. Massive cyber attack. Learn More

We Are Under Attack

From identity theft to the strategic military use of the Internet, cyber crime is a persistent and growing threat. Yet the U.S. Department of Defense predicts a significant shortfall in scientists, engineers and mathematicians necessary to maintain a strong defense.

Because Cybersecurity Is National Security

To address this shortfall that will severely impact our cyber workforce, City of San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders is teaming with The National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) to establish the San Diego Mayor's Cyber Cup. This series of cyber defense competitions are intended to meet the mission and the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) objectives listed below. In support of this competition series, the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and SAIC will work together to make this important project a success.

The Mayor's Cyber Cup: Supporting STEM Disciplines

The mission of the Mayor's Cyber Cup is to:

  • Encourage and retain students in the degree and certification programs of science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines.

The STEM objectives of the Mayor's Cyber Cup are to:

  • Encourage students to learn about information assurance and computer security;
  • Provide an educational venue in which students are able to apply the theory and practical skills they have learned;
  • Foster a spirit of teamwork, ethical behavior, and effective communication both within and across teams;
  • Create interest and awareness among participating schools and students; and,
  • Encourage students to consider information assurance and computer security as a possible career path and/or as a possible course of study to pursue in higher education.
