Energy
Despite unprecedented volatility and change in the energy industry, energy continues to drive world economic growth and development. To help foster this progress, we integrate solutions that enable our customers to reduce costs, streamline operations, and operate more effectively.
Public Energy
Whether customers seek to conserve fossil energy, purchase energy more efficiently, or protect critical infrastructure, we can help. We assess physical and cyber risks to power plants, energy pipelines, water utilities, and Department of Energy nuclear facilities. DOE also uses our research to assess hydrogen programs that could establish a hydrogen infrastructure and help industry commercialize fuel cell vehicles.
An SAIC-led study for Tennessee Valley Authority resulted in the launch of the Power System Optimization Project. PSOP will provide the real-time generation, transmission, and customer data required to operate TVA's power system more reliably and efficiently. PSOP includes the development of enhanced applications, data displays, and analysis tools to support these improvements.
We also work with the Oregon, Wisconsin and New York state energy offices to implement energy efficiency programs for state and local agencies and commercial and industrial clients. And for the State University of New York, we evaluate Internet-based metering technologies and cost management data on energy usage. For the NYC Metropolitan Transit Authority, SAIC is developing and implementing an energy commodity risk management strategy to minimize cost and risk of purchasing electricity.
SAIC Business Consulting & Technology Services
By drawing on our deep scientific experience and innovative business solutions, SAIC Business Consulting and Technology (BCT) services is engaged with three of the super majors supporting their individual Digital Oilfield of the Future (DOF) initiatives and business challenges such as integrating mergers, optimizing business processes, and organizational transformation. Our expertise in creating oil recovery technologies, such as virtual control rooms and advanced reservoir simulations, can help generate increases in oil field production and lifetime.
Benchmarking
SAIC has an 11-year track record of delivering value to the Exploration & Production (E&P) industry through benchmarking.
North America Benchmarking:
Since 1995, SAIC has offered an annual E&P General and Administrative (G&A) Benchmarking Study. This study is the industry's largest continuous source of competitive information, with annual participation covering over 80 percent of domestic production. Participants include oil and gas majors, super-independents, mid-tier independents, and royalty trusts. We work closely with companies to capture comparable information, enabling true peer-to-peer comparisons. Our proprietary methodology provides unique and actionable recommendations. We quantify opportunity areas and offer clarity on efficiencies in resource and capital deployment. Results support data-driven decisions on strategies, resources, processes, cost structures, value levers, and growth potential.Since 2002, SAIC has also offered the North American E&P Operating Cost and Growth Performance Benchmarking Study. This study evaluates growth and value creation and provides a detailed geographical analysis of full cycle cost, margins, reserve replacement and operating costs. Our full-cycle cost and margin analysis distinguishes performing assets from under-performing assets and provides companies with significant insight into their competitive position versus peers.
Global Benchmarking:
For companies with operations in multiple regions around the world, SAIC offers a Global E&P Benchmarking Study, which includes both General & Administrative and key Operating Cost and Growth Performance analysis. This globally-oriented study addresses issues unique to global activity including asset mix (onshore/offshore), remoteness and scope of operations, stage in lifecycle, size of the business unit, expatriate staffing, local labor laws, exchange rate considerations, parent company allocations, etc. This study is designed for companies with operations in multiple countries and includes an external comparison versus peer companies and an internal comparison of multiple assets or operating units within one company.
Knowledge Management
Our Knowledge Management Solutions help clients worldwide save millions of dollars by improving business processes and enhancing productivity. For example, our knowledge experts worked with Unocal to improve electrical submersible pump operations in Alaska, artificial lift processes in Thailand, and the design and delivery of well completions in the Gulf of Mexico and Indonesia. We also helped Hess complete two successful knowledge management projects for production wells in Algeria and high-pressure/high-temperature wells in Norway. To date, the projects have increased performance and saved several million dollars.
Asset Management
SAIC maintains, analyzes, and troubleshoots Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems . These systems monitor and control hydrocarbon production. We are exploring ways to better protect SCADA systems from cyber attack through our R&D efforts.
Strategic Infrastructure Planning
For Entergy's River Bend Nuclear Station, we provide strategic infrastructure planning, support hundreds of desktops, and provide IT support during refueling outages. SAIC meets the unique business requirements imposed in highly regulated environments, including stringent personnel and safety practice requirements.
SAIC and Entergy won the 2004 Outsourcing Excellence Award for Best Refreshed Relationship, presented at the Sourcing Interests Group Conference in Houston May 4-5, 2004. This category recognizes relationships that were already successful and were not facing contract renewal negotiations, but during the past two years restructured several aspects of their contractual agreement and their way of working together in order to enhance the value outcomes of their relationship.
Business Process Management
SAIC is a leader in bringing innovation to business process management (BPM) in the energy industry. We have developed solutions in companies such as Marathon that employ industry-leading business process management practices and tools. Our energy customers were some of the first to adopt BPM tools and additional support infrastructure to harness the capabilities to create, deploy, and execute the entire scope of workflow management and enterprise application integration (EAI).
Our consultants and development staff have expertise in deploying XML and Web Services to achieve unprecedented modularity and extensibility. In addition to integration and automation capabilities, SAIC has expertise in BPM software:
- Microsoft's BizTalk Server - BizTalk Server is Microsoft's central platform for enterprise application integration (EAI) and BPM and embodies the integration and automation capabilities of XML and Web Services technologies. SAIC Business and Consulting Technology is a leader in the design and implementation of Microsoft BizTalk solutions at companies like and Marathon.
- SourceCode's K2.net Enterprise Workflow - K2.net is a leader in business process management for .NET through its enablement of rapid solutions assembly to optimize interactions between people, systems, and process. Using K2.net, SAIC has implemented workflow projects that enhance and extend the Microsoft Office system platform, thus helping our customers derive significant value from their current investments in their IT infrastructure.
- Integrating BizTalk Server and K2.net and providing visibility through Microsoft's SharePoint Portal Server (SPS) and Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) - Our BPM solution uses BizTalk Server and K2.net together in a synergistic fashion, to bring human and system workflow capabilities together in a well managed and optimized environment. The combination of these two technologies have helped our customers reduce their costs while improving the way employees and partners interact with each other over distances, time, and disparate systems. Combined with Microsoft's industry leading SharePoint Portal Server (SPS) we are able to provide our customers with a familiar, user friendly interface that gives them real-time visibility into their current processes.
