Energy Metering, Monitoring,
and Control Systems

Obtaining consistent and predictable control of systems and equipment has immense potential to generate cost-savings in facility energy usage. Demand management also helps minimize cost penalties that may be imposed by utilities due to spikes in energy demand.

Overview

SAIC has used its Energy Management System (EMS) to realize significant facility efficiencies and cost savings for some of the largest auto manufacturers in the U.S. EMS helped monitor and control nearly 20 million square feet of facilities with millions of dollars in savings.

SAIC's EMS integrates a host of energy metering, monitoring, and management solutions that facilitate energy monitoring and control across facilities and staff levels. EMS solutions help provide constant, consistent, and predictable control of systems operation that generate cost savings for facility energy usage.

SAIC's EMS system engineers are experienced in developing and integrating process controls, software technologies, and advanced communications. Our professionals provide seamless integration of new and existing systems into a single, efficient network.

SAIC's custom engineered energy management systems and building management systems provide the following advantages:

  • Open Architecture, Maximum Flexibility
SAIC's EMS is designed to integrate with and complement existing energy management and control systems regardless of the manufacturer. EMS uses a Web-based platform to permit a high level of availability, access, and portability. Anyone with a Web browser can securely access the EMS to monitor facility EMS equipment and energy usage reports.

As a result, everyone is accountable for their own energy usage. Areas with high energy consumption may then be targeted for energy conservation. Because EMS is Web-based, there is no software to load on the EMS users' workstations, resulting in reduced support costs.

  • Alarms, Warnings, and Paging
EMS equipment downtime is reduced using automatic warnings to operators when parts of the system begin to degrade, usually before plant production personnel notice environmental changes. This allows for planned downtime and pre-emptive maintenance, which reduces production downtime and increases the life expectancy of the EMS equipment.

  • Triple Benefits: Cost, Health, and Safety
SAIC's EMS supports utility load management that minimizes severe cost penalties that may be imposed by utilities due to spikes in energy demand. Two configurable warning points for demand allow EMS administrators to alert system users and enable them to take action (reduce power demand) before cost penalty thresholds are reached.

EMS may also support environmental health and safety by helping maintain a minimum building pressure atmosphere to expel oil mist and dust generated in plant workspaces, creating a cleaner and safer working environment.

Success Stories

  • Automobile Plant Controls Recommissioning

SAIC replaced HVAC system controls and conceived, designed, fabricated and installed an energy management control system. We retrofitted 10 air handlers with new controls and new operational sequences. Documented savings during the first month of operation were more than $200,000.

  • Building Management System Upgrades, Automobile Manufacturer

SAIC conceived, designed, fabricated and installed Web-based building management systems at multiple facilities for a major division of one of the country's largest auto manufacturers. The systems provide monitoring and control at facilities comprising more than 1 million square feet. Each building management system has 2,500 control points.

  • Energy Management Control System Upgrades, Automobile Manufacturer

SAIC conceived, designed, and installed Web-based energy management control system upgrades for a vehicle manufacturing plant as part of the manufacturer's energy savings project initiative. Eight systems provide monitoring and control of facilities ranging from 750,000 square feet to more than 4 million square feet with paybacks in less than two years. To date, SAIC has upgraded more than 18 million square feet with resultant energy savings estimated at $8.4 million annually.
