Energy-Related DesignBuild(SM) Services
SAIC's DesignBuild services provide a seamless union of architecture, engineering, and construction of critical infrastructure. Our teamwork and focus on client objectives result in more innovative, cost-effective and timely project completion than typically result from traditional methods.
Overview
The design/build method of project delivery integrates all aspects of designing and building a project under a single contract, as opposed to the more traditional method of awarding separate design, engineering and construction contracts. The traditional approach may hamper cost, schedule, and innovation by separating project phases and critical responsibilities among different contractors.
Our in-house multidisciplinary architecture, engineering, and construction management experts provide solutions that focus on environmental impacts, energy conservation, and systems integration, while achieving and sustaining energy effectiveness.
SAIC's comprehensive DesignBuild approach results in innovative solutions that do not typically result from using traditional approaches. That is why our projects have won some of the design/build industry's highest honors and awards, including 28 design awards in recognition of energy-efficient facilities (see chart below).

Our Process
SAIC's services begin with the initial conceptualization of a project through comprehensive consulting services, LEED-certified architecture and design and project construction. We also act as project developer, providing expert design, build, own, operate, and maintain (DBOOM) options.
Whether installing system upgrades at a single location, or building an entirely new state-of-the art facility, our deep domain knowledge of our clients' businesses, operations, and facilities enables us to deliver energy-efficient solutions to the most challenging projects.
Success Stories
HVAC System DBOOM for Automobile Assembly Facility
SAIC delivered DBOOM services for a 1.8 million square foot (sf) manufacturing plant. Our services were delivered under a guaranteed savings contract and included renovating and replacing the existing plant HVAC air-handling units with perimeter-located, air-rotation units that provide even temperature distribution throughout the facility while significantly reducing fuel consumption. The HVAC replacement system is saving significantly on energy costs. The new installation is controlled with a programmable logic controller energy management system.
Design/Build Services for 45 Million Gallon-Per-Year State-of-the-Art Biofuels Facility
SAIC recently designed and constructed the first of its kind biofuels facility in the U.S. The 45 million gallon-per-year facility will produce biodiesel from both vegetable and animal feedstocks, providing flexibility during the projected 20-year life of the plant. Learn More »
Design/Build Services for Energy Savings Projects, Auto Manufacturer
We have been a demand-side energy service supplier to a major U.S. automobile manufacturer for more than five years, with projects in 38 facilities in 11 states, Canada, and Mexico. We provide design/build, own and transfer services for energy management systems, lighting system upgrades, HVAC optimization, and paint-shop controls.
This program is designed to develop energy-savings projects that offer financial payback to the company. Projects are initially identified by the client. Then SAIC completes the development stage and defines final maximum cost before individual projects are approved. Each energy savings project is financed with energy savings over the term of the project. Project costs are inclusive of all costs, including SAIC's responsibility to self-perform the design/build projects at risk.
Award-Winning Plant Cooling System
SAIC provided design/build services for a geothermal cooling system for a major U.S. automobile engine manufacturing plant. Our in-house hydrogeologists, environmental scientists, engineers and construction professionals used a renewable natural resource near the plant site (two large 360 million-gallon quarries) to design and build a cooling system that extracts cold water from the bottom of the quarries.
The design employs a non-contact approach that protects the integrity of the quarry ecosystem, while allowing the client to avoid purchasing new chiller systems and cutting plant annual electrical usage by more than 4.8 million kilowatt hours.
The project won the Design-Build Institute of America's 2005 National Design-Build Award, the organization's highest honor.
An Integrated Approach
SAIC's DesignBuild approach is a highly integrated process that delivers focused teams, time and cost savings, and energy-efficient solutions that meet our clients' goals and objectives.
Our innovative geothermal cooling system for a U.S. auto manufacturer won the Design Build Institute of America's highest honor.
