Distribution Automation
SAIC helps customers enable distributed intelligence through the application of technological solutions paired with infrastructure improvements.
Improving Infrastructure Efficiencies
In order to improve reliability and efficiency and reduce capital costs and operation and maintenance expenses, utilities must turn their focus toward enabling distributed intelligence through infrastructure improvements. An integral part of the emerging smart grid is the extension of supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) communications and functionality from substations into the distribution system, known as distribution automation (DA). Integrating system-wide measurements of voltages from smart meters, combined with control of remote capacitor banks, load tap changers, and voltage regulators, allows such strategies as conservation voltage reduction (CVR), enabling utilities to reduce line losses and improve system efficiency.
Scalable Solutions Optimize Investments
SAIC is helping utilities by modeling the operational impact of those devices on their distribution systems. We offer extensive knowledge of distribution system engineering, the latest distribution automation technologies, and proven approaches to striking an appropriate balance between distribution automation costs and functionality/benefits. We combine SAIC's expertise in distribution automation with other smart grid technologies to help enable customers to optimize their investment in these systems, achieving modernization of a utility's energy delivery infrastructure.
Automated Controls Integrate the Energy Environment
Using microprocessor-based equipment, SAIC works with utilities to integrate devices using communications technology and programmable logic to enable data gathering, supervisory functions, and automated control in an integrated substation environment. Our team helps assist customers in making the necessary upgrades, additions, or replacements in order to reap the financial and energy efficiency benefits from these sophisticated technologies. Our services include:
- Relay and SCADA integration
- Microprocessor-based relays and intelligent electronic devices
