Weather Modeling and Forecasting

Anticipate the future with weather modeling and forecasting solutions from SAIC.

From Weather Predictions to Sound Decisions

SAIC integrates scientific and computational expertise to produce accurate weather models and forecasts for applications such as disaster warning, resource management, and the day-to-day operations of businesses and governments.

Weather Modeling and Forecasting Solutions

SAIC's understanding of modeling and sensor systems helps us deliver all the modeling and forecasting outcomes required by decision-makers and other end users. Our capabilities include:

  • Weather, hydrological, and climate applications
  • Numerical analysis and prediction techniques
  • Physics processes and algorithms driving numerical weather prediction (NWP) models
  • Assimilation of satellite data, in-situ data, and other environmental data into NWP models
  • Environmental and visualization tools
  • Missile launch support activities
  • Transition of research and development systems to operations
  • Forecaster and technician training
  • Outreach to decision makers

A History of Experience

SAIC has spent decades improving the precision and flexibility of weather models and forecasting tools for U.S. and international agencies such as:

  • The U.S. Air Force Weather Agency
  • The U.S. Navy Meteorological and Oceanographic Command
  • The National Weather Service
  • NASA Earth Sciences Division
  • National Meteorological and Hydrological Services worldwide
  • The Missile Defense Agency

National Centers for Environmental Prediction

SAIC supports global modeling research at the National Centers for Environmental Prediction into assimilation of satellite and conventional observations on a global scale, advanced numerical techniques for modeling the atmosphere and interactions between the atmosphere, ocean and land surfaces, and other fields to benefit the oceanographic and meteorological community.

Coupled Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction System (COAMPS®)

SAIC has played a key role in the development of the Navy's COAMPS system, which is designed to improve the accuracy of short-term forecasts for both military and civilian operations.

Atmospheric Models and Hurricane Season Forecasts for NASA

For 15 years, SAIC has provided modeling support to NASA Goddard Space Flight Center's Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO). Our integrated approach has greatly shortened development cycles for high-visibility projects such as development of a high-resolution version of the Goddard Earth Observing System general circulation model for the 2006 hurricane season and an international field investigation into the impact of Saharan dust on hurricane creation.

U.S. Air Force Weather Agency Modeling Support

SAIC experts help the Air Force Weather Agency (AFWA) develop, acquire, deploy, and operate new and enhanced forecasting and analysis software, models, and algorithms for space and terrestrial weather.
