Case Studies

GHG Inventory for Electricity and Natural Gas Utility

For a large electricity and natural gas utility in the Midwestern U.S., SAIC identified and summarized the requirements, benefits, and costs of potentially participating in the GHG registries and programs for which the utility is eligible. In addition, we provided the key elements for developing an inventory and created a data management and inventory calculation tool that incorporates these elements into an emissions inventory.

Developing a GHG Inventory for a Major Government Agency

SAIC helped a U.S. defense agency develop a credible and auditable inventory of annual GHG emissions at five of its major facilities. The inventory included receiving, storing, and shipping activities; an equipment repair plant; a dedicated truck fleet for freight transfer; and housing for military families. The inventory was designed to facilitate reporting to a broad range of GHG protocols in the U.S.

Climate Change Response Strategy for a West Coast Utility

For a large Northern California utility district, SAIC completed a comprehensive Climate Change Response and GHG Strategic Planning report responding to the physical, regulatory and societal demands of climate change in California, addressing activities to 2030 and impacts to 2100. The plan focused on the utility district's existing GHG emissions and load profile, existing and anticipated climate change policies affecting California, the future regulatory landscape, and the utility's obligations to neighboring communities related to climate change.

GHG Inventories for the Public Sector

For a major port in Southern California, SAIC identified, quantified, and ranked potential GHG emission sources, most of which are mobile sources. Our staff then developed a port-wide GHG inventory, including emissions from employee commuting and leased facilities.

Data Management for a Fortune 500 Financial Institution

As part of preparing annual sustainability reports for a major U.S. financial institution, SAIC gathers GHG inventory and other sustainability data from across all business lines according to the firm's Global Reporting Initiative. SAIC also compared various enterprise level software reporting tools and implemented a third-party, cost competitive, web-based project management system for task assignment, document submission, on-line discussion, and version control. The system makes the process of submitting input rapid and intuitive and has limited the need for the client to resubmit information for future reports.

Energy and Emissions Savings for a Large University

SAIC helped reduce annual natural gas and electricity consumption at 34 facilities owned by a large university located in the northeastern U.S. Reduction measures included energy efficiency improvements, green energy procurement, introduction of combined heat and power, fuel hedging, purchase aggregation, and performance contracting. The project resulted in annual natural gas savings of 100,000 DTH and electricity savings of 4 MW.

Reducing Energy Consumption at an Automobile Manufacturer

SAIC worked with an automobile manufacturer to reduce energy consumption and GHG emissions at 38 facilities in the U.S. and Canada. The project included installing building automation systems and energy management controls; improved heating, ventilation, and air conditioning; lighting improvements; building envelope modifications; enhanced electric motors and drives; energy related process improvements; and HVAC equipment commissioning.

Climate Change Action Planning for Eastern State

SAIC assisted an eastern U.S. state develop a state-wide climate change action plan. Using estimates of future GHGs under a "business as usual" scenario, SAIC developed three scenarios for achieving GHG emission reductions in the state. These were developed by identifying potential response strategies and ranking them according to their emission reduction potential, cost, and other environmental benefits. Using these scenarios, SAIC worked with the state to develop a climate change action plan. In addition, SAIC established monitoring and verification plans for each policy recommendation to support appropriate accounting of GHG emission reductions.

GHG Inventory Management System for a Refinery

SAIC developed a tool to support the GHG emissions inventory at a major west coast refinery. The tool works directly with the company's existing environmental data monitoring and reporting system. Estimation functions include the option of using source-tested, user-specific, or default-based emission factors. The tool includes a built-in "credibility check" to determine the relative accuracy of each GHG estimate.
