Greenhouse Gas Inventories and Strategies
To quantify and manage carbon footprints, SAIC helps a broad range of public and private organizations develop GHG inventories, devise management strategies and plans, and provide accurate, high-quality reporting of GHG data.
Develop Accurate Inventories and Calculate GHG Emissions
SAIC helps individual agencies and organizations address the complexities of accounting for GHG emissions. We develop accurate GHG inventories, also known as carbon footprints, using recognized methods and protocols. Because each business is unique, we help define scopes, ownership boundaries, and materiality of GHG impacts on a case-by-case basis to ensure that each inventory is complete and accurate.
Understand Industry-Specific Implications
In addition to helping individual organizations, SAIC develops detailed, sector-specific GHG protocols that help business and industry sectors accurately calculate emissions. This includes protocols for the oil and gas sectors and electricity generation.
Determine Comprehensive Response Strategies and Action Plans
Unpredictable energy costs and tighter regulations for GHG emissions are driving many types of organizations to re-evaluate their GHG objectives. After completing a full GHG inventory, SAIC helps clients develop comprehensive plans for modeling impacts of emerging legislation, forecasting future emissions, evaluating internal reduction options, and purchasing high quality GHG offsets. To develop the plan, SAIC assesses a client's unique circumstances and provides comprehensive climate change response strategies that are tailored to their needs.
Develop Effective Inventory Management Plans and Systems
SAIC works with organizations to design GHG inventory management plans that align with strategic objectives, including desired voluntary and mandatory GHG reporting requirements. This includes developing or selecting a GHG inventory management system, defining a management approach, establishing quality assurance and quality control procedures, and documenting all methods and assumptions. SAIC also helps manage inventories over time and implement emissions-reducing projects that deliver results.
Implement GHG Reduction Strategies through Capital Improvements
As a full service architect, engineering, and design-build provider, SAIC can help deliver the visions established in GHG management plans by implementing energy-efficient capital improvements. From increasing process efficiency to constructing new energy-generation facilities or switching to cleaner fuels, SAIC's expertise in implementing sustainable and low-emission facilities helps deliver the necessary results.

Case Studies
GHG Inventory for Electricity and Natural Gas Utility
For a large electricity and natural gas utility in the Midwestern U.S., SAIC identified and summarized the requirements, benefits, and costs of potentially participating in the GHG registries and programs for which the utility is eligible. In addition, we provided the key elements for developing an inventory and created a data management and inventory calculation tool that incorporates these elements into an emissions inventory.
Developing a GHG Inventory for a Major Government Agency
SAIC helped a U.S. defense agency develop a credible and auditable inventory of annual GHG emissions at five of its major facilities. The inventory included receiving, storing, and shipping activities; an equipment repair plant; a dedicated truck fleet for freight transfer; and housing for military families. The inventory was designed to facilitate reporting to a broad range of GHG protocols in the U.S.
Climate Change Response Strategy for a West Coast Utility
For a large Northern California utility district, SAIC completed a comprehensive Climate Change Response and GHG Strategic Planning report responding to the physical, regulatory and societal demands of climate change in California, addressing activities to 2030 and impacts to 2100. The plan focused on the utility district's existing GHG emissions and load profile, existing and anticipated climate change policies affecting California, the future regulatory landscape, and the utility's obligations to neighboring communities related to climate change.
GHG Inventories for the Public Sector
For a major port in Southern California, SAIC identified, quantified, and ranked potential GHG emission sources, most of which are mobile sources. Our staff then developed a port-wide GHG inventory, including emissions from employee commuting and leased facilities.
SAIC: At the Forefront of GHG Management
SAIC's staff includes well-recognized GHG experts, including members of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's roster of GHG inventory experts.
Our specialists developed inventory expertise even before the Kyoto Protocol was negotiated; hence, they've been at the forefront of developing the world's evolving GHG management practices.
