SAIC’s Modeling and Simulation Solutions for Live, Virtual and Constructive (LVC) Domains
Our goal is to facilitate the integration of LVC components to support the warfighter during battlefield operations, sustainment training, and mission planning/rehearsal.
SAIC M&S LVC Solutions
SAIC provides end-to-end modeling and simulation (M&S) solutions across the three domains: Live, Virtual and Constructive (LVC). Each of the solutions below delivers state-of-the art technology in each of their domains.
- Synthetic Environment Core (SE Core): The common synthetic environment
- OneSAF: The constructive domain and virtual simulation toolkit
- Simulator Product Line: The virtual domain
- Desktop Tank Gunnery Trainer
- Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System (MILES): Live Training
- Live Training Systems
- Evocative Training
SE Core: The Common Synthetic Environment
SE Core is the U.S. Army's Common Virtual Environment initiative to link virtual training simulation devices into an integrated and interoperable training system. It is driven by the vision of transforming military training and creating dynamic, capabilities-based training across the full spectrum of service, joint, interagency, intergovernment and multinational operations. SE Core provides a common synthetic environment (SE) core with an embedded toolkit of virtual, reusable components common to multiple training simulation systems worldwide. Its common virtual simulation architecture links simulations into an integrated, dynamically composable, training capability that supports battlefield operations, capability sustainment training, and mission planning/rehearsal. SE Core provides an open architecture that is non-proprietary and fully supports extension as new requirements arise.
SE Core Development and Integration
SAIC began work on SE Core in 2005 under the U.S. Army's Simulation, Training and Instrumentation Command (STRICOM). SAIC has defined a virtual simulation architecture (VSA), implemented common virtual components (CVC) and modified One Semi-Automated Force (OneSAF) to support the virtual simulation domain. Today SAIC is the lead developer and integrator of new technologies and capabilities into SE Core for the U.S. Army's Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training and Instrumentation Program (PEOSTRI).
OneSAF: The Constructive Domain and Virtual Simulation Toolkit
OneSAF is a composable, next-generation computer-generated forces system that can represent a wide range of operations, systems, and control processes, from individual combatants to brigade. It builds on and is integrated with SE Core to make simulations real and fully interoperable in the two-dimensional world. OneSAF simulates the full range of operations with multiple levels of fidelity from the physics of the brigade and battlefield to the behaviors of individual warfighters and manned and unmanned vehicles within it. OneSAF provides the set of automated, composable, extensible and integrated tools for creating the full simulation lifecycle from scenario development through after-action review. Development of OneSAF was driven by the U.S. Army's mission and three critical needs:
- Reducing the duplication of investments by eliminating the need for multiple simulations
- Fostering interoperability and reuse of common components
- Meeting M&S requirements.
OneSAF is U.S. government open source software. Standards-based and adaptable, OneSAF shortens simulation development cycles and reduces development costs. Users can compose new entities, units, groups, behaviors, and scenarios with little or no programming. The OneSAF community is comprised of multiservices, the defense industry, and international. To inform and educate current and potential users, OneSAF holds annual user conferences in Orlando, Florida. Both user and developer training are provided and SAIC delivers the 5-day OneSAF developers course.
Simulator Product Line: The Virtual Domain
SAIC's expanding virtual simulator product line provides efficient, cost-effective, flexible, measurable and trackable immersive training for warfighters. SAIC's Common Driver Trainer (CDT) product line provides the foundation for effectively and efficiently training soldiers on tracked and wheeled combat vehicles using high fidelity vehicle cab variants integrated into the CDT system.
SAIC's CDT simulator product line integrates commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) technology and features more than 100 high-fidelity, cutting-edge, operationally-relevant simulations and scenarios in various terrains, weather conditions, and times of day. The CDT platform provides a six-degrees of freedom (DOF) motion base which delivers a realistic feel and drive in the execution of various driver training scenarios. The CDT platform includes automatic student scoring, after-action review, and training record management along with a scenario development tool among other features. Additional scenario development and system customization is available.
Desktop Tank Gunnery Trainer
SAIC's Desktop Tank Gunnery Trainer is a portable, cost-effective solution for training tank gunners that can be flexibly expanded to train and network full tank crews around the world. The tank trainer system provides the actual instrumentation of the M1Abrams Main Battle Tank gunner station in a deployable, low-cost training simulator.
To enhance the realism of simulated tank training, the trainer system provides force feedback, simulating the actual recoil of the tank and includes automated voice Commands. The Tank Gunnery Trainer incorporates serious tank gaming technology and scenarios using "Steel Beasts® Professional" software developed by eSims® Games, LLC.
Tactical Engagement Simulation Systems (TESS) - Wireless, Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System (MILES) Systems for Live Training
SAIC is a recognized leader in the design, development, and production of tactical training technology and the state-of-the-art Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System (MILES) laser-based systems and products for live combat training range exercises. SAIC provides next generation, wireless laser training systems for warfighters today and expands SAIC's end-to-end simulations solutions product line.
SAIC's Individual Weapon System (IWS) is wireless, making it transparent to the warfighter. It is quick and easy to install, eliminating distracting cables and harnesses associated with other MILES. The Instrumented MILES Combat Vehicle System (IMILES CVS) interoperates with the IWS. The interoperable components that make up the IMILES CVS are highly adaptable to other combat vehicles and weapons systems. The light weight, low power MILES components are interoperable from the dismounted warrior to mounted Combat Vehicle Systems (CVS) and scalable to large live exercises at military training ranges.
The modular design of the IWS and IMILES CVS facilitate lower lifecycle costs and flexibility of use. Major components of the wireless MILES IWS and CVS are designed to support the U.S. Army MILES, One Tactical Engagement Simulation System (OneTESS), and Operational Test-Tactical Engagement System (OT-TES) programs, and will meet current and future European Union (EU) and international combat training center and home-station training needs.
Live Training Systems
To demonstrate the power of completely integrated training, SAIC has created an end-to-end, networked, live training range demonstration. SAIC provides the required live training range products, communications infrastructure systems, and the instrumented participant voice, video, and data communications systems.
Evocative Training
SAIC has developed Evocative Training to address a variety of comprehensive training challenges in such areas as psychological health, mental and physical resilience, and leadership development. This innovative methodology begins with a rigorous instructional design process that drives the development of a multimedia training program that, at its heart, uses dynamic storytelling to fully engage the audience on both the necessity of the training and the subject to be trained.
Each training project is carefully crafted with a particular audience in mind, emphasizing experiential learning but taking into account the variety of ways in which trainees acquire knowledge.
