Case Studies and Success Stories

California Independent System Operator
The CA ISO is a not-for-profit corporation created by the state to control the power grid in California and surrounding areas. As the CA ISO builds e-commerce capabilities, the on-site SAIC Team is providing the PKI, directory service, and business process re-engineering support the group needs to meet the minute-by-minute market demands and maintain a safe, reliable power grid. Our Team is supporting the implementation of a PKI, as well as perimeter security and vulnerability assessment mechanisms. We are also providing configuration management support.

CONNEXION by BoeingSM
SAIC provided business continuity/disaster recovery consulting services to Connexion by BoeingSM. This is a high speed Internet access service for airlines, business jets, and government aircraft. SAIC performed a requirements analysis to determine the recovery readiness of the technical infrastructure, and we developed a Disaster Recovery/Business Continuity Program Management Plan, which defines management responsibilities, and program activities and processes for developing and maintaining a coordinated and integrated disaster recovery/business continuity-planning program.

CyberProtect
CyberProtect is an award-winning risk-management network-defense exercise. It allows individuals to play one-on-one against the computer's artificial intelligence in an exercise intended to increase familiarity with IA concepts and terminology. The participant is exposed to a wide spectrum of security threats and must make practical decisions regarding the application of network security. CyberProtect is recognized as an industry innovation in IA training. The quality and impact of this CD-ROM have resulted in its being adopted as a standard part of Level I system administration certification, not only by DISA, but elsewhere within the DOD.

Department of Energy
SAIC performed a security analysis of the DOE Office of Environmental Management network. Using a variety of tools, including our own network scanning and analysis tools, as well as manual checks to test the network for avenues of penetration, SAIC identified existing vulnerabilities, provided a qualitative measure of what could be exploited, and provided mitigation solutions.

Global Managed Services
Our engineers configured and deployed more than 50 UNIX-based firewalls/VPNs located in 30 countries worldwide for a leading international financial organization. We established the "baseline" security policy. Then we implemented a fully remote administration and monitoring service, including the dispatching and tracking of vendor maintenance staff in supported countries.

Joint Inter-Agency Task Force West
JIATF West, the military command for counter-drug surveillance in South America and the Pacific Rim, requested an architecture study that would assist in translating IT requirements shortfalls into capabilities and therefore funding requests. This five-year technology insertion architecture addressed the phased integration of security solutions that would provide enterprise-wide, layered protection.

Open Source Monitoring Services for Banking and Financial Community
SAIC is performing intelligence services for two of the world's largest financial institutions. These services provide a view of threats that extend beyond the current perimeter defenses. SAIC's OSM enables these customers to respond to infringements beyond the reach of traditional security safeguards. Additionally, SAIC's solution allows its customers to proactively track incidents and obtain performance-based metrics across security events regardless of source.

SIPRNet Certification
SAIC engineers assisted the Defense Information Systems Agency in successfully completing a DIACAP certification of the Secret Internet Protocol Routed Network (SIPRNet) backbone - the largest classified global network in the Defense Department. Final accreditation was achieved in one year with the majority of the certification support completed in just 6 months. The SAIC team's efforts were applauded by DISA senior managers - citing the SAIC team's professionalism, technical know-how, and partnership with DISA staff (from systems administrators to senior commanders) as the key to success.

SPAWARSYSCEN San Diego
SAIC analyzed physical security threats and vulnerabilities for SPAWAR System Center San Diego. Our analysis focused on identifying vulnerabilities in existing pedestrian and vehicle access controls and the overall security posture of the center. SAIC provided specific security measure recommendations, priorities and cost-benefits, determined an action plan, including milestones, and provided a detailed description of the benefits and risks of the various approaches.

U.S. Army, Navy, and Marine Corps
For the U.S. Army, Navy, and Marine Corps, SAIC is helping deploy nearly 3 million smart cards to all active duty personnel and selected reservists and civilians. The cards, incorporating PKI and digital signature technology, will replace existing ID cards and will be required to access buildings and computer networks.
