Network Services
Reliable operation of the enterprise network is no longer just a business utility it has become a necessity for business survival. Information and network technology have evolved beyond a way to improve productivity and decrease cost, to strategic resources for competing in a global marketplace. Economic and competitive pressures force enterprises to derive the greatest possible business value from the transfer of information and knowledge. An effective IT infrastructure has become key to obtaining information faster, from more sources.
IT Network Services is being driven by demands for faster network access, more bandwidth, distributed client/server computing, and new multimedia applications including streaming audio/video. The rate of technology change and a corporation's acceptance of technology as a business enabler have served to complicate and challenge internal IT service organizations. New computing platforms and complex enterprise-wide application packages promise enterprises more agile, more competitive environments for business, but installing, upgrading, and maintaining these complex systems is often a daunting task.
Today, most corporations have deployed their networks in the context of applications and individual projects. This ideology creates patchworks of dedicated resources for voice and data, audio/video, and other applications too numerous to mention. Inconsistencies, "Band-Aid" solutions, and lack of interoperability can lead to network downtime. And the cost of network downtime can be painful in terms of revenue, productivity, damaged reputation, financial performance, and in some cases litigation.
Consequently, leading enterprises are placing greater emphasis on the input, thinking, and experience of those who can help them benefit quickly from emerging network technologies. Leading enterprises look to SAIC.

Success Story
In 2006, a petrochemical company, bought by a new company, needed to completely reorganize and transition their IT network of approx 40 sites worldwide and 12,000 users. The challenge was to completely redesign, procure, build and implement a new global network, reduce overall total cost of outsourcing and ongoing communications costs, and to ensure optimal use of network resources in addition to high levels of security and performance.
SAIC mobilized its engineering team to design a solution which would meet the customer requirements, the most prominent of which being lowest total cost of outsourcing. SAIC designed, configured, deployed and subsequently operated this low cost wide area network environment without compromise in either performance or security. SAICs final solution leveraged the Internet to reduce one-time and ongoing communications costs, used on-demand VPN technology to greatly simplify the management of IPSEC tunnels and allowed the seamless integration of new sites and services into the wide area network environment.
The SAIC design featured:
- A global single Wide Area Network (WAN) built using a Cisco Dynamic Multipoint virtual private network (VPN) based IPSec (IP security) network over a multi-carrier Internet based connectivity model
- Use of Cisco integrated service routers, Cisco IOS Firewalls and Intrusion Protection System used for security
- Multipoint latency and metrics monitored using IP SLA probes for preventative application troubleshooting
- Remote users access network via Internet terminating in Juniper Networks Security VPN Solution
- 24x7 Network and Security Operations from a centralized location
- Single point of contact for Moves, Adds, Changes (MACs), technical administration, Tier1-3 support, architectural consulting and a single point of contact for service management and billing for global connectivity service
