Working on Energy and the Environment for More Than Three Decades

Since its founding in 1969, SAIC has supported a wide range of important energy and environmental missions. Here are a few examples.

19721972

Helped the Atomic Energy Commission perform first full-scale probabilistic risk assessment of a nuclear power plant.

19751975

Sampled 770 sites up to 6,000 feet deep as part of a major environmental effort to predict the effects of oil and gas exploration off the Southern California coast.

19781978

Helped the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) develop effluent guideline regulations and drinking water standards for the nation’s waterways.

19791979

Responded when the Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant in Pennsylvania was damaged. Industry and government officials brought in SAIC’s mobile radiochemistry laboratory to analyze and monitor radioactive releases.

19871987

Began evaluating innovative technologies for treating hazardous wastes at Superfund sites for the EPA.

19891989

Deployed during the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska to assess how the oil would weather and biodegrade in the sub-arctic environment of Prince William Sound. SAIC’s study of oil-water interactions helped estimate the area’s recovery time.

19911991

Provided long, vertical acoustic sensor arrays to digitally record underwater signals propagated from Heard Island in the southern Antarctic Ocean. From the data on signal travel times, scientists calculated ocean temperatures and predicted the environmental effects of greenhouse gases on a global scale.

19941994

Helped EPA integrate a variety of legacy systems into one uniform multimedia system that simultaneously manages air, water and hazardous waste data. The EPA presented this system to President Clinton as one of the agency’s key achievements for 1994.

19981998

Developed technical criteria to track and support the sale of "green" generation products to consumers for the National Association of Utility Regulatory Commissioners.

20042004

Helped NASA process, display and analyze data gathered by satellites to better understand oceanic factors in global climate change.

20052005

Helped the U.S. Geological Survey process and deliver nearly 22 terabytes of imagery to aid emergency workers and assess environmental damage from Hurricane Katrina.

20082008

Managed the program that created the first residential solar energy community in North America.
