All-Terrain VACIS® Inspection System

Overview

SAIC's All-Terrain VACIS® inspection system mounts SAIC's non-intrusive gamma ray inspection technology on either of two rugged, all-terrain capable vehicles: the M1114 HMMWV® (this variant is also called the Military Mobile VACIS system), or the International® MXT™-MV. Both systems consist of a detector array typically mounted on the vehicle platform and a gamma ray source mounted on a small remote-controlled electric source cart. This All-Terrain VACIS system extends inspection capabilities to hostile or difficult-to-access areas.

When our customers invest in inspection equipment, they expect more than just hardware. At SAIC, our solutions can combine complete training, service, maintenance and support programs. SAIC is an experienced supplier of mission-critical systems, providing industry-leading technology and services to our customers around the globe.

Applications

In operation, the All-Terrain VACIS system's vehicle platform and source cart move synchronously past the target (moving scan mode), or remain stationary while the target vehicle drives between them (stationary mode). This flexibility supports a wide variety of inspection scenarios, from simple checkpoint scanning of cargo containers and trailers to bumper-to-bumper scanning of high-risk targets.

Features

  • Cobalt-60 gamma ray source provides high penetration capability: 6.25 in (159 mm) of steel.
  • User interface is similar to other commercial VACIS units.
  • Low radiation dose per scan: nominal (approx.) dose per scan above normal background level at the centerline of a target container is 16 µrem (0.16 µSv).
  • Full set of VACIS image viewing and manipulation software, including contrast stretch, zoom, region of interest, sharpen, smoothing and others, as well as image archiving and transmission to remote viewing stations using commonly available hard-wired, fiber-optic, or wireless communication interfaces.

Benefits

  • Rapid deployment capability: All-Terrain VACIS inspection system setup and stowage require less than 15 minutes each when performed by skilled, experienced operators.
  • Air portability: The overall dimensions of the stowed All-Terrain VACIS inspection system mounted on a HMMWV® vehicle platform, including the source cart trailer, are <28.9 ft (8.8 m) long x <7.9 ft (2.4 m) wide x 8.5 ft (2.6 m) high. Mounted on an international® MXT™-MV platform, the system has overall dimensions of <31.7 ft (9.7 m) long x <8.3 ft (2.5 m) wide x 9.7 ft (3.0 m) high. Both systems are compatible with C-130 Hercules airlift requirements.
  • High throughput: The All-Terrain VACIS inspection system can scan a 40 ft (12.2-m) container in approximately six (6) seconds in stationary mode. With skilled, experienced operators positioning the system and performing the image analysis, inspection turnaround times of less than one minute are achievable. Specific image analysis time varies according to operator experience and cargo being inspected. A series of containers can be scanned in a single pass using the "Quick Save" software feature.
  • Operational flexibility: The All-Terrain VACIS inspection system supports diverse inspection scenarios, including force protection, border interdiction, contraband screening and cargo evaluation.
