Pallet VACIS® Inspection System

Overview

The Pallet VACIS® unit consists of a self-contained gamma ray imaging system designed to quickly image fully loaded pallets or pallet-sized containers. A low-level gamma ray radiation source penetrates a stationary target positioned within the inspection cabinet. Detectors located on the opposite side of the cabinet measure the absorption of this low-level radiation, as the source and detector array are synchronously moved vertically along the target object's full height. The measured absorption data is processed and displayed for operator viewing and analysis. A three-section, independently-controlled conveyor mechanism moves the pallets into and out of the inspection cabinet to maximize throughput.

Applications

The Pallet VACIS unit is designed for use at customs facilities at seaports, airports, or land borders. It is ideal for any number of industrial or military uses. Aviation facilities can use it to assist in the inspection of incoming or outgoing air cargo. And ground transportation carriers and security services can screen pallet and break bulk cargo for contraband, manifest verification, and large threat objects.

Features

• A safety exclusion zone outside the inspection cabinet is not required (tunnel doors remain open).
• Video cameras inside and outside the cabinet give the operator full remote visibility.
• Emergency stop buttons in various locations can immediately halt the conveyor/lift and close the source shutter, and a safety brake and load-holding valve hold the detector and source shelves should a lift component fail or hydraulic fluid pressure be lost.
• Sensitive components are protected by a heater and a thermostat unit that control the cabinet temperature for optimal performance

Benefits

The Pallet VACIS system does not require high-level shielding. It is more reliable and less costly to acquire and maintain than comparable x-ray systems. Penetration of pallets containing denser loads, such as produce, is easily achieved with the Pallet VACIS system.
