Missile Design Tool (MDT)

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When will Missile Design Tool be available?

A: Product was released in July 2006.

Q: How does MDT work with MFT?

A: MDT is a missile editor that reads and writes missile definition files used by Missile Flight Tool (MFT). It can read or write any MFT missile file, including existing standard MFT files and new missiles released with MFT 7.1.

MDT is good at fast, interactive missile editing. It includes a quick analysis feature that graphs missile performance dynamically as the missile is being edited. You can get rapid feedback on the effect a change in missile design has on performance. After a missile has been designed in MDT, then it can be simulated in MFT using MFT's high accuracy trajectory calculator. The two programs complement one another in speed and accuracy. MDT is fast and approximately accurate; MFT is slower and highly accurate.

Q: Can I edit reusable launch vehicles in MDT?

A: Not yet. Automatic generation of .mdl files from missile dimensional data is expected to be added in the first maintenance release. Missiles are assigned models from the existing database of shapes that is supplied with MFT.

Q. Does MDT create 3D missile models for export to Satellite Tool Kit® (STK®)?

A: Yes. MDT automatically generates .mdl files. These models can be modified using the editor supplied with STK.
