RailView® Locomotive Video Recorder

Overview

The RailView system is SAIC's locomotive-mounted digital video and audio event recorder. The RailView system records video and audio in a continuous loop - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Installed in standalone configuration, SAIC's field-proven RailView design stores for later retrieval crucial video and audio information regarding events leading up to, during, and after an incident. In addition, the system can be integrated with an event recorder, allowing it to receive and time-stamp data from the locomotive operational indicators, saving the data with the video and audio recording.

The RailView system can record operational data and technical information including:

  • Rail track images
  • Grade crossing images
  • Locomotive speed
  • Direction
  • Audible warnings
  • Power control (emergency) status

The RailView system's data is protected by password security. Only users with approved access can download events and data to a laptop computer for review, evaluation and analysis. Designed for durability and tamper resistance, the RailView system is also lightweight and easy to install.

Applications

The RailView system has helped customers avoid lawsuits, and has been used successfully as evidence in U.S. courts. In addition, the RailView system is a powerful operational tool for studying varied conditions of track, train movement, personnel, and is used as a training tool.

Features

The RailView system stores a complete streaming audio, data and video archive. It has been thoroughly tested and optimized for locomotive installation, use, and maintenance. Features include:

  • Each RailView video picture is a complete exhibit - every RailView digital video picture can stand alone as evidence with complete information pertaining to the time, date, and reference to other images in a recording sequence.
  • The RailView system is designed to mount in any locomotive, and connects directly to standard locomotive power systems.
  • The RailView system has status LEDs clearly viewable to provide instant status.
  • RailView information is viewed using the RailView Playback Viewer, which allows searches.
  • All events are correlated with time and date. See photo.
  • Rugged, measures only 2.5" x 2.75" x 4.5" and weighs only 3 lbs. (approx.); mounts solidly in the locomotive window without obstructing the engineer's view.
  • System data is protected by password security; only users with approved access can download events and data to a laptop computer for review, evaluation and analysis.
  • External interfaces include 100BaseT Ethernet network, parallel port, serial port, and event recorder.
  • Internal storage includes standard 80-GB hard disk drive and removable 1-GB CompactFlash® solid-state disk drive.

Benefits

With over 2,500 RailView systems in daily operation, the system has been field proven as a reliable and robust digital recording tool for rail customers. Once installed, the RailView system requires no additional intervention until the information is needed. It can help:

  • Reduce legal claims & litigation expenses
  • Provide Video/Audio evidence of actions of drivers and warning systems prior to incidents
  • Record train incidents (passing stop signal, etc.)
  • Aid in derailment investigations (track buckles, mis-aligned switches, etc.)
  • Record grade crossing "near-misses" or right-of-way equipment conditions
  • Provide a powerful training tool and indisputable incident record
