SAIC Implements its Smart Grid as a Service Solution for Western Alaska Villages Utilities

SAIC and Intelligent Energy Systems (IES) implemented SAIC’s Smart Grid as a Service (SGS) solution for four Alaskan villages.

Overview

SAIC’s Smart Grid as a Service (SGS) provides a comprehensive, affordable, and integrated one-stop resource for the Western Alaska Villages Intelligent Energy Systems (WAVIES) utilities. Our nation’s electric power grid needs maintenance and upgrades, but most of all, it needs to leverage the digital era to improve reliability and reduce costs. Smart grid infrastructure provides remote village economies the ability to use wind energy, thermal storage, and reduce their dependence on fossil fuel.

“SAIC has been great to work with. They are responsive, supportive, and thorough. The system is affordable, and SAIC provides a complete village energy management platform.”
- Dennis Meiners, IES president

The integrated hardware and software solution provides these utilities with advanced metering infrastructure, outage alerts, and remote connection capabilities. The technology also provides the foundation for future integration of fuel, water, temperature, and alternative energy metering. Our smart grid infrastructure will enable these communities to lower energy costs and reduce dependence on expensive diesel fuel, which devastates local village economies. The data collected will also support important strategic reliability decisions for future energy use throughout Alaska.
