SAIC Helps Safeguard an Exploration Company’s Shale Assets

Overview

A major oil and gas exploration company, not named for security purposes, retained SAIC to develop an enduring security program to prevent any disruptions to the drilling program. Shale gas exploration activities had been disrupted by threats of violence, protests, thoroughfare obstructions, equipment damage, and vandalism as hostility toward shale gas exploration escalated in the area.

After conducting a threat, risk, and vulnerability assessment (TRVA) of the drilling sites and operation, SAIC developed and implemented a comprehensive security plan, which includes the following:

• Identified essential supplies, secured spare supplies on site, and established alternate delivery methods for other materials to circumvent delivery roadblocks and avoid material shortages
• Trained the company’s guard force to monitor the area, conduct daily threat assessments, and respond appropriately to events
• Added backup power resources and repositioned security cameras for reliable, full-area coverage

Throughout the drilling season, SAIC exchanged intelligence with local law enforcement to proactively manage the demonstrations and protect the company’s assets. As a result of our work, the company was able to conduct operations in a hostile environment with zero operational disruptions because of security incidents.
