Tetra Pak Inc.

Liquid Food and Beverage Cartons Recycling Infrastructure Development

SAIC worked with Tetra Pak Inc. to evaluate its current carton recycling program plan and create a new expanded plan for potential future markets and trends.

Overview

With growing consumer interest in sustainable packaging comes greater demand for recycling opportunities.  In response to this demand, and in support of the company’s commitment to sustainability, Tetra Pak, a global leader in the manufacture of aseptic and gable-top cartons, is working with local governments, recyclers, and stakeholders across the globe to establish more carton recycling programs.

In the United States, Tetra Pak is seeking to enhance the existing recycling infrastructure, now serving approximately 22 million households (18 percent of population), and establish programs to aggressively expand opportunities to recycle both aseptic and gable-top cartons.

Tetra Pak contracted with SAIC to research implementation options and develop a recycling plan that is practical and sustainable. The final plan included steps for increasing carton end markets, building the recovery infrastructure with a focus on developing additional processing capacity, and promoting stakeholder and public understanding of the benefits of carton recycling.
