Renewable Energy Demonstration for the U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command

SAIC is conducting two renewable energy projects to make the U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command more self-sufficient in energy production and waste management.

Overview

The U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command is making renewable energy at Air Force installations a priority. The command is studying and implementing technologies that, when deployed as a system, will help meet the needs of the installation. SAIC continues to work for the Air Force Special Operations command on renewable energy demonstration projects as a part of the command’s objective to become more sustainable. SAIC brings wind, solar, and carbon-dioxide expertise to the projects, analyzing real-world energy data to demonstrate the true influence of each component.

SAIC is involved in two demonstration projects related to the U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command’s advanced wastewater treatment plant and its waste-to-energy system. In the first project, SAIC is testing a variety of alternative energy sources, including photovoltaic solar and wind technologies to power the wastewater treatment plant. SAIC is analyzing the best energy source for the proposed small- to medium-scaled grid-tiered system and distributed electric technologies by comparing solar and wind sources. SAIC completed an environmental baseline study and an area development plan for the project and designed and installed the demonstration.

The second project is to show how the carbon dioxide waste produced by the waste-to-energy system can be used to grow algae that will be converted into biodiesel fuel and subsequently, create a zero-emissions system. We are analyzing the potential for the proposed construction of multiple algae ponds to use the carbon-dioxide waste in energy production. Our team is also analyzing the use of algae ponds to develop a business case for creating an onsite biodiesel generation and distribution plant.

By demonstrating and implementing these renewable energy projects, SAIC is helping the Air Force Special Operations Command demonstrate alternative energy options to the Department of the Defense. This research and execution will ultimately help meet renewable energy mandates and Air Force Infrastructure Strategic Plan initiatives.
