Comprehensive Architecture and Engineering Services at Schriever Air Force Base Space Innovation and Development Center

SAIC played a key role in architecture, engineering, and interior design for the new 127,000-square-foot Space Innovation and Development Center.

Overview

The Space Innovation and Development Center is a sensitive compartmented information facility (SCIF) simulation center that supports research in advanced space technologies. The 127,000-square-foot Space Innovation and Development Center (SIDC) facility was completed in two building phases. In Phase I, the 48,000-square-foot Space Test and Evaluation Facility (STEF) was completed.  For Phase II, SAIC performed full architecture and engineering design services for the 79,000-square-foot Air and Space Integration Facility (ASIF).

The SIDC includes computer simulation and operations centers, SCIF areas, soundproof rooms, special-purpose areas, administrative offices, loading dock, storage space, remote mail facility, kitchenettes, and mechanical/electrical/electrical/communications support rooms for high-reliability utility support.

Along with architecture, engineering, and advanced communications systems services, SAIC provided comprehensive interior design packages for both facilities. The design and finishes were selected to coordinate providing a cohesive facility that takes into consideration sustainability, durability, and ergonomics. SAIC’s interior design services included:

  • Space programming
  • Site investigations and survey
  • Design charrette
  • Space planning

SAIC also provided sustainable/green design services. The sustainable design features include:

  • Maximized open space
  • Stormwater quantity control
  • Light pollution reduction (shaded parking lot lighting)
  • Water use reduction (low-flow toilets and urinals)
  • Construction waste management (extensive construction waste recycling)
  • Recycled content (high utilization of recycled materials)
  • Indoor air quality (high utilization of low-emitting materials throughout building)
  • Controllability of systems (extensive use of automated lighting and thermal comfort systems)

Other SAIC services provided include:

  • Innovative audio-visual and graphics displays
  • Antiterrorism/force protection measures
  • Access control and intrusion detection systems
  • Protected distribution systems
  • Classified and unclassified networks
  • Raised access flooring
  • All conference rooms configured and equipped for presentation technology
