Transportation Safety and Security

SAIC works with U.S. state and federal agencies to identify the most effective techniques and technologies to improve the safety and efficiency of the transportation system. We craft solutions to mitigate potential threats to and vulnerabilities within this critical system.

Highway Safety

Did you know that more than 41,000 people die on our Nation's roadways every year? That is more than 110 people a day on average. SAIC works with state and federal departments of transportation to identify and test safety countermeasures, to develop safety guidance documents, and to provide outreach, marketing, and training for safety best practices. We work to save lives every day.

Work Zones

Work zones account for 25% of all non-recurring delay on our nation's highways. SAIC supports local, state, and federal agencies in developing programs to alleviate mobility and safety issues in and around work zones. We also provide training courses targeted to all levels of expertise including technicians, planners, and engineers.

Motor Carrier Safety

About 12% of all highway fatalities result from accidents involving commercial vehicles. The Federal Motor Carrier Administration has established a goal to reduce the commercial vehicle fatality rate from the 2005 rate of 0.24 per 100 million vehicle miles traveled to 0.16 per 100 million vehicle miles traveled by 2011. Through the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program (MCSAP), the Federal Motor Carrier Administration is providing states with funding for enforcement and compliance operations to help achieve the goal of reducing commercial vehicle related fatalities.

SAIC supports federal agencies by conducting MCSAP compliance assessments to ensure that states are implementing MCSAP in accordance with federal requirements. The MCSAP National Review Program includes three components: an assessment of state compatibility with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations; compliance with Federal grant management requirements; and, effectiveness of program implementation in meeting FMCSA goals.

Intelligent Transportation Systems

We are on the leading edge of developing new techniques for independent assessments, outreach, and transition strategies. We work both domestically and internationally to promote best practices for intelligent transportation system evaluation. Our staff co-authored federal guidelines for self-evaluation of intelligent transportation systems and developed the Evaluation 101 Training Course.

Transit

Transit agencies across the country face challenges in providing transit services that are both safe and efficient. SAIC works with transit agencies to identify and share best practices in transit safety and transit operations, including the use of transit intelligent transportation system (ITS) technologies.

Security

Since the events of 9/11, there has been significant focus and resources applied to securing air travel and the air cargo supply chain. Did you know that almost 90% of our Nation's cargo arrives in our seaports by container and is transported by truck or rail to its final destination, and that over 90% of highly hazardous materials (toxic inhalants and flammable gases) are transported over our Nation's rail infrastructure?

SAIC works with our uniformed services and other Federal and state government agencies to assess threats and vulnerabilities and identify mitigation strategies to secure our seaports and surface transportation systems and infrastructure. Our security professionals and engineers are involved in designing and evaluating security systems and in developing tools, methodologies and technologies for industry and government at port, truck and rail terminals and along our highways and railways.
