How the Air Force is Designing Better Munitions

SAIC Equips Air Force to Tackle Extremely Complex Munitions Challenges

Mission Need

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) develops, tests, and evaluates guided munitions. The complexity of modern missions requires highly accurate simulations and robust testing environments to ensure new technologies are effective and reliable. Realistic testing environments closely mimic real-world conditions. This includes accurately simulating communication networks, physical environments, and the performance of various algorithms, software, and hardware components.

Enabling AFRL in their pursuit of better munitions, SAIC acts as the prime industry partner on the WESTAR program, creating comprehensive testing. When military branches, industry leaders, and international collaborators ask, “Would this work?” the WESTAR team gets to work. From algorithms to hardware prototypes, they provide AFRL with high-fidelity simulations, real-time test networks, and sophisticated data analysis tools. These capabilities allow for thorough testing in environments that mirror actual combat conditions to equip military personnel with realistic preparation.

SAIC's all-encompassing approach includes real-time testing of both software and hardware, known as hardware-in-the-loop. Recently, the team has examined navigation systems that don’t rely on traditional GPS and AI-assisted targeting systems for improved effectiveness in maritime engagements.

To demonstrate these capabilities, AFRL conducted a key demonstration in June 2025. The demonstration was attended by top military leaders, including Generals focused on materiel, armaments, and technology. The demonstration showcased the effectiveness of these capabilities in providing a modular and adaptable testing framework, capable of integrating various elements required for modern munitions testing.

This modular approach highlighted how challenges in creating realistic and reliable testing environments can be effectively overcome, ensuring that new capabilities are thoroughly vetted and ready for deployment, quickly, efficiently, and effectively.

Mission Impact

Enhanced realism in testing environments created by SAIC have enabled the Air Force to conduct evaluations that closely mimic real combat conditions. The development and evaluation cycle of munitions has been significantly reduced by these testing measures, allowing new technologies to be deployed faster and more efficiently. The comprehensive testing framework not only improves accuracy and reliability but also ensures that all new capabilities are thoroughly vetted and ready for deployment, ultimately enhancing the operational readiness of the Air Force in mission critical situations.
